what is thethirdchair?
thethirdchair is a Grand Rapids counseling center for high school students, college students and young adults. At our core essence, thethirdchair is here because there was a need for it. The city of Grand Rapids needed a safe place devoted entirely to the counseling of young adults. thethirdchair is a collective bunch of counselors who specialize in counseling high school students, college students and post college/young adults.
Our staff has devoted their lives to learning how to counsel people who are struggling and are able to handle almost any problem young adults struggle with. Look, life is hard. It’s not always clear what we should do. Sometimes the only way we can go forward is if we talk things out with other people. It doesn’t matter what you’re going through… just know that you don’t have to go through it alone.
Chances are a lot of us counselors have struggled with similar things, so we strategically pair up those who come to us with someone who can actually relate to them and understands what they’re going through. We’ve made a super cool space for ourselves in the old Brassworks building, one that is warm and inviting, that people actually like hanging out in. We believe the young adults of Grand Rapids are worth it.
is this going to be awkward?
Umm, maybe for the first session – sort of like a first date – but then after that, not at all. See, we actually like talking out problems with people. Every Grand Rapids counseling center has such a formal stigma and we try to get rid of that. We did our best to create a space that people would actually want to hang out in. Sure, you can call it counseling, but it’s so much more than that. We have board games!!
can I afford this?
The simple answer is YES! thethirdchair was founded so that young adults and families could have an option of where to go for counseling regardless of their financial situation. We wouldn’t have it any other way. We believe the young adults of Grand Rapids are worth it. So even if you’re broke and you’ve never been here, this counseling center is already yours.
where is thethirdchair located?
We are located in the Historic Brassworks Building on 648 Monroe Ave NW, suite 216 — take the Ottawa Street exit off I-96, near downtown. Take a right on Michigan, then a right on Monroe (near the Grand Rapids Press Building). Our building (the Brassworks Building) is .2 miles on the right hand side — and we’re in suite 216!
